CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
The earliest schools to be established in Nigeria were built by the missionaries and traders. The school building then, was quite accommodating because the people then that were interested in education were very few. And the schools then were built around the supreme being which is and most of the schools as at then we are administered by the missions until 1976 when the government took over the administration of the secondary schools. These school were managed, staffed and equipped by the missions and private agencies. Since the state government took over the control of secondary schools and with the geometric increase in population there has been the need to build more secondary schools in many areas and the existing ones becomes overcrowded, because the people have also seen the need to be educated. When they saw that the aim has been changed to make one a useful citizen, there came massive enrollment for the common entrance examination and the schools faced the problem of accommodating the increasing number of students.
There are eleven secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area. About half of these are established by the missionaries such as the Roman Catholic Mission and CMS (Church Missionary Society). Today the schools are overcrowded, and accommodation becomes a problem.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
This study is concerned primarily with examining the problem of accommodation in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of in Edo State. In our schools system, the problem of accommodation persists, the problem of accommodation include; inadequate classroom, lack of stores and laboratory facilities, absence of staff quarters and lack of stores and laboratory facilities, absence of staff quarters and lack of accommodation for a clinic. The main tasks of the study is to find out the problem of accommodation in selected secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State and how this problem can be solved.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this project is to draw the people and the governments attention to the problem of accommodation in the selected secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It is proper solutions or recommendations for overcoming this problem in our schools in order to pave way for improvement.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This is designed to examine the extent to which the secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area have been faced with the problem of accommodation.
It is hoped that this research work will be useful to the school administration and class teachers with a view to improve teaching and learning among students in schools.
It will also help to minimize the indiscipline associated with the problem of accommodation.
The research work is expected to serve as a guide to school administrators within Edo State of Nigeria, in the design of school curriculum with a view to overcoming the problem of accommodation.
It is also hoped that the information herein would help the ministry of education and the communities in the allocation and choice of a piece of land for the purpose of building a new school in the near future.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
In this project work, the researcher confirms his study on accommodation problem to select secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area to enable him have a reliable and concrete evidence. This is the only way the researcher will solve the problem. The principals, class teachers, students, parents teachers association and ministry of education will form the population of the study.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following research questions were used;
There are no enough classrooms in secondary schools? Most of the current books are not available because of lack of library accommodation. Materials meant for schools like the junior secondary school technical materials are stolen because of lack of good stores for them. Performance of students in practical science is poor because of lack of laboratory facilities. Students cannot easily seek for the help of a teacher after school hours due to lack of staff quarters. Teachers and students health are exposed to danger due to lack of clinic accommodation. here enough drugs in the clinic? Yes ( ) No ( )
