Abstract
Community plays an important role in childhood education. The importance of English language cannot be overemphasized, due to its role in social, political, economic and environmental development. English language functions as a vehicle of interaction and an instrument of communication. This study examines community contribution in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within Usman Danfodiy university environment. The paper tries to highlight the challenges of teaching and learning English language in Nigerian schools. The paper also, discusses useful strategies the teachers and learners of English language in Nigerian schools may adopt so that teaching and learning of English would be simple.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
Learning is a product not only of schooling but also of families, communities and peers (Engin-Demir, 2009). Learning takes place in many environments – home, school and workplace (IRBD/WB, 2006). Therefore, education is the business of schools, family and community and ensuring quality is the joint effort of all these participants (Bojuwoye, 2009; Christenson, Rounds, & Gorney, 1992; J. Epstein & Connors, 1995). The study also shows that there is no comprehensive research done on family and community factors with regard to education quality in udus community, although, these elements are recognized in the literature as key factors in enhancing quality secondary education. Therefore, it is pertinent to know about the factors related to community in the local culture of udus environ in order to frame the agenda of ensuring quality secondary education. Learning is relatively permanent change in behavior as a result of exposure to condition in the environment. Also learning is an inference from some performance of the organism manifesting change of behavior, change in behavior must be permanent and this implies gain to the organism for his/her survival. However, the concept of learning is the relatively permanent change in behavior or capability that results from experience. It is concerned with relatively stable change that occurs in an individual behavior as a result of interaction with his environment. The reasons that cause student difficulty in English language learning are due to learners, lack of efficiency of the school, and the insufficient parents’ promotion of the language. Moreover, Alderman (2004), observes on the students’ poor performance in language learning affected from a lack of effort, lack of effective learning strategies, whereas a good language learner is a highly motivated student and a successful user of a large number of different strategies (Trawinski, 2005). So, teachers have to help them improve the motivational belief and language learning strategies in order to find ways that reach to their academic achievement. Community-connected learning — a set of strategies to engage young people in learning experiences beyond the classroom — holds great promise for English language learners in addressing these challenges. Community-connected learning strategies include internships at work sites and project-based learning in classrooms. In the best community-connected learning activities, students come to understand the nature of expertise in a career area and the connection to academic learning, to understand how they might pursue and expand upon their own interests, and to observe and work alongside adult experts in a variety of workplaces and occupations
In this regard, it is timely and appropriate to investigate the factors affecting the quality of secondary education related to the community in the local context of udus environment in Sokoto state.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study has been undertaken in order to survey some contribution of community in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within the Usmanu Danfodiyo university Udus metropolis of Sokoto state and challenges faced in learning English language and to look at implication for language Educators. It has been observed that senior secondary school student experience difficulties in areas such as grammar-lexis and structure, composition-letter writing, oral English-comprehention to mention just a few. This study tends to examine weather lack of community contribution could be the reason for very low proficiency in Oral and written English in the study area
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
This study has two objectives, the broad and the specific objective; the broad objective is to examine the contribution of community in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within Usmanu Danfodiyo university environment; the specific objectives are:
- i) To determine the performance of secondary school students on English
- ii) To find out the types of community contribution in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within udus environment
iii) To find out the level of community contribution in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within udus environment
- iv) To find out challenges affecting community contribution in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within udus environment
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following research questions were formulated by the researcher to aid the completion of the study;
- i) Has secondary school students performance in English language improve in the study area as a result of community contribution?
- ii) What types of contribution has the community contribute in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within udus environment?
iii) Has the level of community contribution been able to promote learning of English language among secondary school students within udus environment?
- iv) Are there challenges affecting community contribution in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within udus environment?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will be of great importance to the leaders of the Udus community as the study seek to examine the benefit of community contribution in promoting effective teaching and learning of English language among secondary school student in Udus metropolis, the study will also be of great importance to the management of this secondary school as the study seek to highlight the benefit of collaboration between the school management and the host community for effective teaching and learning of English language among secondary school students in Udus. The study will also be of great importance to researchers who intend to embark on a study in a similar topic as the study will serve as a reference point to further studies. Finally, the study will be of importance to students, teachers, academia's lecturers and the general public as the study will contribute to the pool of existing literature on the subject matter and also contribute to knowledge.
1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The scope of the study covers community contribution in promoting learning of English language among secondary school students within Usmanu Danfodiyo university environment of Udus. But in the course of the study, there are some factors that limit the scope of the study;
- a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
- b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
- c) Finance: Limited Access to the required finance was a major constrain to the scope of the study.
