ABSTRACT

The main thrust of this is to examine the Effect of poor maintenance in graphics studio equipments in the department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Nigeria Nsukka; To examine the Causes of maintenance problems in graphics studio equipments in the department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Nigeria Nsukka. The study made use of three research question questions. The objectives of the study are; To understand the reasons for poor maintenance culture in the department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Nigeria Nsukka; To investigate the effects of poor maintenance culture on the full utilization of graphics studio equipments. The study reviwed extant literatures relevat to the study. Two sources of data were utilized in the study. The study which was on current issue with historical antecedents demanded primary and secondary sources of data. The primary sources of data for the study included personal interviews, direct observations and structured questionnaire sent to the respondent  who were the direct primary providers of information for the study. The secondary sources of data were collected from newspapers, articles and journals, scholars works and other relevant internet sources. The study was an empirical study. Adequate efforts was made to employ appropriate statistical methods of presentation and analysis. The frequency tables and simple percentages were utilized in presenting the data. The researchers utilized the SPSS statistical tools.Based on the study, the following are the findings; The Causes of maintenance problems in graphics studio equipments are;Purchasing Inferior graphics equipments, Bad technician, Use of fairly used or Substandard.the  following recommendations are made:The identification of the appropriate type of maintenance to be adopted for different type of  graphics studio equipments, Special  intervention  funds  should  be  set  aside  by  government  for procurement/maintenance of graphics studio equipments, A specific percentage of  revenue  generated by the institution  should be utilized for the provision and maintenance of graphics studio equipments  in the school

 CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Fine and applied art education generally is faced with several issues some of which have militated against the effective and efficient teaching and learning of art at the different levels of education in Nigeria with the resultant effects of training incompetent and skilled job seekers instead of job creators and employers of labor. Art as a concept has been defined as the totality of a man’s creativity while creativity is the use of ones imaginative skills to produce a physical object or develop ideas that impart positively and bring about a radical change in an organization or society Buraimoh(2008)

Fine art also known as visual art is a branch of art concerned with conception or imagination, and creation of art works employing different resources and techniques for the production of objects of aesthetic or beautification values. Painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking fall within this category. This category of art encompasses all activities involving the application of aesthetic designs to everyday functional objects.

Applied art on the other hand, involves the conception, design, and production of art objects using variety of resources and techniques for beautification and utilitarian purposes. Ceramics, textile design, photography, architecture, computer art, industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design, as well as all decorative arts are included in this category. While fine art provides intellectual stimulation to the viewer, applied art creates utilitarian items such as a cup, bowls, water closet, a couch or sofa, a clock, a chair or table using aesthetic principles in their design. Imparting artistic knowledge, skills and competence, is dependent on several educational variables

Maintenance culture in Nigeria is the lowest around the world, especially, in our principal towns and cities. Unknown to most developers and property users alike, lack of maintenance has impact on the level of utilization of the property. Neglect of maintenance has accumulated consequences in rapid increase in the deterioration of the fabric and finishes of a building, accompanied by a harmful effect on the contents and occupants (Seeley, 1987).

Maintenance according to Joash (2018)is the construction of all technical and associated administrative actions intended to retain an item in or restore it to a state in which it can perform its required function. Oladimeji (2015) described maintenance as the combination of any actions carried out to retain an item in or restore it to an acceptable condition.

Maintenance in this study suggests the habit of regularly and consistently keeping a equipment in good and working condition. In support of this assertion, Suwaibatul-Islamiah, Abdul-Hakim, Syazwina, & Eizzatul (2012) posited that maintenance culture is the values, way of thinking, behaviour, perception and the underlying assumptions of any person or group or society that considers maintenance as a matter that is important and practices it in their life. If a nation must develop, it is imperative that installation as well as maintenance of its existing facilities be given priority.

Onwuka (2010) stated that maintenance management is concerned with the planning and control of construction resources to ensure that necessary repairs and renewal are carried out with maximum efficiency and economy. Ajibola (2009) defined maintenance as the work that is done regularly to keep a machine, building or a piece of equipment in good conditions.

Maintenance culture which encompasses provision for adequate care of the hard earned infrastructure have not gained ground in the consciousness of resource managers in the country over the years, and consequently, you see government buildings at the verge of collapsing, abandoned factory plants and machinery, dilapidated school buildings, pot-holes and chasms on the constructed highway roads, deserted vehicles with minor problems, moribund industries and a host of other property belonging to the country which have little or insignificant problem.

These actions in myriad ways have resulted to a colossal waste of scarce resources. It is really one of the major problems, hitherto ravaging and undermining the developing countries, especially Nigeria. Bamgboye (2006) posits that maintenance is the art of bringing back the operating condition of an asset into normal functioning at a minimal cost capable of enhancing the life span of the item. In other words, maintenance is the ability and skill of keeping infrastructures available for normal use and the designed life span of many infrastructures are at present very low in Nigeria. Life span enhancement necessitates a culture of adequate maintenance.

This study therefore examined the Effect of poor maintenance in graphics studio equipments in the department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Nigeria Nsukka

1.2 Statement of Problem

Existing educational equipment in Nigeria lacks adequate maintenance attention. Most graphic equipment are in a very poor and deplorable conditions of disrepair. While considerable research have been carried out on maintenance of these equipment in Nigeria but only scanty attention has been given to the key parameters of the impact of poor maintenance of graphics studio equipments  on the full utilization of educational property. There is therefore a need to establish and evaluate the impact of poor maintenance of graphics studio equipments

1.3   Research Questions

  1. What are the Causes of maintenance problems in graphics studio equipments in the department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Nigeria Nsukka?
  2. What are the reasons for poor maintenance culture in the department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Nigeria Nsukka?
  3. What are the effects of poor maintenance culture on the full utilization of graphics studio equipments?
