MANAGEMENT OF RECREATIONAL FACILITIES AT SANDA KYARIMI AMUSEMENT PARK

Abstract

The aim of the study is to assess the management of Sanda Kyarimi Park, Maiduguri, Borno State. Data collection for the study were accomplished using questionnaire and on the spot assessment during repetitive visits. Questionnaire were administered: to the management of the park; park wardens and zoo keepers, and park visitors. The park wardens and zoo keepers were sampled based on their hierarchy on the organizational chart. Visitors to the park were sampled in four days i.e. five (5) visitors per day by probability as they obtain gate pass. Descriptive statistics using tables, frequencies and simple percentage (%) were employed in presenting the result. The management policy formulation lies with the zoo management, but funding is by the state government Ministry of Environment. There are sixty (60) workers (40 males and 20 females) in the park. Problems in managing the park are feeding of animals by visitors, resistance to pay gate fees, unruly behaviour of visitors and indiscriminate waste disposal. The park has a vehicle which is in good condition. Visitor’s guides are always present to direct the visitors but they lack practical uniforms. Animal housing such as pens, cages, paddocks and other enclosures are in good condition. Recommendations are made to improve on effective management for visitors’ relaxation and satisfaction whilst act of illegal behaviours while in the park should be controlled through prosecution.

CHAPTER ONE

           INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

Studies concerning recreation centers cannot be comprehensive without first understanding the act of recreation itself. This is because recreation Centers are only facilities designed to enhance the act of recreation. Smith (1969) defined recreation as a form of play or amusement, refreshment of the body and mind. Something that pleasantly occupies one’s time after work is done. It has also been described as an activity, which is voluntarily undertaken and practically motivated by leisure and satisfaction. Recreational centers include parks, public open spaces, sports facilities, gardens, etc. In Borno State there are notable facilities such as the Sanda Kyrami State Park that has develop into a 42 acre wildlife sanctuary as well as a botanical park. Kaplan (2018) also sees recreation as one of recreating or revitalizing people that they may efficiently return to activities which are not recreation but economically gainful work. Furthermore, recreation under good supervision can help strengthen one and contribute to human happiness. The benefits of recreation to man’s wellbeing is emphasized by Riggs. Riggs (2015) in his discussion in “The Function of Recreation to a balanced life” Riggs states that recreation in relation to work afford a refreshing contrast o responsibility and routine, it keeps the spirit of adventure and that sense of proportion which prevents taking one self and one’s work too seriously.

A park is established primarily to show to our urban population wild animals that exist around us because most urban residents do not have the opportunity to visit national parks or game reserves which are generally located some kilometres away. The establishment of parks awakens interests and appreciation in nature and solidifies the co-existence between man and wild animals (Ayodele et al., 2009). It is also a place of relaxation and entertainment that can give opportunities for people to satisfy their human curiosities in seeing different animal species at a close range. It also educate and create consciousness of the public in the need for conservation and natural resources sustainability in breeding of endangered species in captivity. Parks have aesthetic values which would induce repetitive visits and generation of income from gate fees. Educational research on the inmates on aspects of comparative anatomy, pathology, behaviours and reproduction are also easily undertaken. According to the World Conservation Strategy, parks posses and manage collections that primarily consist of wild non-domesticated animals of one or more species that are housed so that they are easier to see and to study than in nature (International Treaty on Conservation, 2004). Parks serve for conservation which is the management of human use of the biosphere so that it may yield the greatest sustainable benefit to the present generation while maintaining the potential to meet the needs and aspirations of future generations (Allen, 2015). Wildlife Conservation is the practice of protecting endangered plant and animal species and their habitat. Basically there are two major systems of conserving biological resources which are in-situ and ex-situ. The In-situ conservation system is conservation of biological resources within its habitat such as establishment of protected areas (National Park, Game Reserves, and Nature Reserves). Ex-situ conservation system is carried out outside the natural environment such as zoological and botanical gardens and seed banks so as to supplement the conservation of biodiversity within the natural environment (McNeely et. al., 2013). The aim of establishing parks lie in the importance of tourism, sustaining vanishing species, educating human societies on wildlife, advances in human medicine, ecological principles in conservation, provision of employment opportunities and income generation (ITC, 2004).

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Demand as used by the planner “is the number of persons required to take part in particular recreational activities and hence is manifested in demand for facilities”. This affects the design of various locations. The park has to be designed according to the demand of an area. There are problems in managing captive animals and the intending viewers. These include feeding in terms of quality, quantity and timeliness and control of viewers especially children. It is in view of this that the researcher intends to investigate the management of recreational facilities at Sanda Kyarimi Amusement park

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study has one main objective which is subdivided into general and specific objective, the general objective of this study is to assess the management of recreational facilities at Sanda Kyarimi amusement Park, the specific objectives of this study are;

  1. To examining the welfare of the animals in captivity;
  2. To identify the problems in managing visitors and animals;
  • To investigate the staff welfare and capabilities in managing the park.
  1. To proffer suggested solution to the identified problem
    • RESEARCH QUESTION

The following research questions were formulated by the researcher to aid the completion of the study;

  1. Is there adequate manpower to cater for the welfare of the animals in captivity?
  2. Are there problems in managing visitors and animals in Sanda Kyarimi?
  • Are there challenges to the staff welfare and capabilities in managing the park?
    • RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

The following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher to aid the completion of the study;

H0: there is no problems in managing visitors and animals in Sanda Kyarimi

H1: there is a problems in managing visitors and animals in Sanda Kyarimi

H0: There are no challenges to the staff welfare and capabilities in managing the park

H2: There are challenges to the staff welfare and capabilities in managing the park

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will be of great importance to the management of Kyarimi Amusement park as the findings of the study will be of great importance to effective management of the park, the study will also be of great importance to researcher who intend to embark on a study in a similar topic as the study will serve as a reference point to further study, the study will also be of importance to student of the department tourism as the study will aid in policy formulation in the department. Finally the study will be of importance to students, teachers, academia’s and the general public as the study will add to the pool of existing literature on the subject matter and also contribute to knowledge on the subject matter.

  • SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers the management of recreational facilities at Sanda Kyarimi amusement park in Borno state, but in the course of the study, there are some factors that limit the scope of the study;

  1. a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
  2. b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
  3. c) Organizational privacy: Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities.
