A STUDY OF STRESS AND ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENT OF MARRIED FEMALE STUDENTS.


ABSTRACT

Stress is the mental and physical response and adaptation by our bodies to the real or perceived changes and challenges in our lives. A stressor is any real or perceived physical, social, or psychological event or stimulus that causes our bodies to react or respond.
The present study sought to investigate the stress and academic adjustment of married female students in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with respect to some demographic variables. Stress and academic adjustment were treated as dependent variables. The independent variables comprised of age, faculty of study, part/level and maternal status. For the purpose of investigation, descriptive survey method was employed. The sample comprised of 200 married female undergraduates studying in OAU, ILE-IFE and the respondents were randomly selected. Personal Data sheet prepared by the investigator and questionnaire was used to collect data. The Statistical Package Social for Scientists (SPSS) application version 17 was used to analyze the data collected Additionally, the independent t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed the significant differences in students, the obtained data analysed using means, S.D’s and t-test.
The findings of the study revealed that:
1. 195 out of the 200 respondents experienced stress in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
2. There is no significant influence of age on stress and the academic adjustment of married female students in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
2. There was influence of the faculty area of study on the stress and academic adjustment married female students in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
3. There is no significant influence of the part/level of study on the stress and academic adjustment married female students in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
4. There is no significant influence of the maternal status on the stress and academic adjustment of married female students in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife.
